Preparing for a New School Year

by In: Leadership | Published: Aug 3, 2010

Hi! My name is Tauhid Chappell and I’m a student at Virginia Tech. I work for Planet Blacksburg, which is a student run, web-only, newspaper that “rivals” (if you can even call it that) the college newspaper on campus.

A lot needs to be done this upcoming semester for my organization. We’re extremely understaffed right now but I hope that a heavy recruitment phase during the first couple of weeks will bring in some fresh talent who are eager in contributing to our site while building their electronic portfolio’s.

As this fall semester creeps closer, how is your newspaper (or online-only newspaper) preparing for the new school year? What roles need to be filled? How are you planning to recruit new writers, editors etc.? What are some obstacles, both new and old, that your organization faces? Will there be any changes that occur come fall?

Hope everyone is excited to return to their respective college!

About Tauhid Chappell

Hi! I'm a Junior at Virginia Tech and I work for an online, student-run, media organization called Planet Blacksburg. I joined Planet Blacksburg in January 2009 and have worked a variety of jobs in the organization. Currently I'm a producer for one of it's news show and a novice photographer as well. I aspire to become a multimedia producer and I'm addicted to social media and social networking sites (especially Twitter).

Ah yes, trying to get everything up and going again.
Typically our executive board meetingsonce a week through out the year, but our first week back we met twice to spread out the amount of stuff we had to discuss and get ready.

Here at The Prodigy we are hitting the problem of short staffing. Our execs are here, but lower staff not so much. People come and go. So, our plan has been a marketing blitz: posters, flyers, email notices, facebook status updates, and tweets. Get the word out anyway you can. See what professors will let you pitch the paper in their classes for a few minutes. All that good stuff. We had all of two reporters the first day of school, now we have about 6 and its increasing.
Table at events. You just need to ask your self, “Is there a way I can promote the paper at this or with this?“
    It will come together.
